AI-Powered Digital Manufacturing
Researchers at The University of Queensland are helping drive Australia's transition to digital manufacturing through the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing. By combining artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins and industrial data, the Hub is developing smarter manufacturing systems that aim to improve productivity, resilience and competitiveness across Australian industry.

At a glance
- Driving Australia's digital manufacturing future through the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing.
- Using artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins and industrial data to develop smarter manufacturing systems.
- Aiming to boost productivity, resilience and global competitiveness across Australian industry.
What's the problem?
Manufacturers generate vast amounts of data from equipment, production lines and supply chains, but turning that information into actionable insights remains a significant challenge. Traditional manufacturing systems can struggle to predict equipment failures, optimise operations and respond quickly to changing conditions.
As Australia seeks to strengthen its sovereign manufacturing capability, there is increasing demand for technologies that improve efficiency, reduce downtime and help industries remain globally competitive.
What's UQ's innovation?
Professor Helen Huang, Discipline Leader for Data Science in UQ's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, leads the UQ node of the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing. Working with researchers Associate Professor Mingyuan Lu, Associate Professor Archie Chapman, Dr Yadan Luo and Dr Zijian Wang the team is contributing to the development of AI-enabled manufacturing technologies that help turn industrial data into actionable insights.
The Hub's research focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, digital twins and open digital platforms that can model, predict and optimise manufacturing processes. By analysing industrial data, AI can help organisations anticipate faults, optimise standard operating procedures (SOPs), improve operational performance, and make more informed decisions.
What's the impact?
The Hub is exploring applications across a range of industries, including AI-powered predictive maintenance for the aerospace sector, intelligent monitoring systems and advanced manufacturing technologies designed to improve production quality and reliability. Researchers are also investigating how AI-enabled manufacturing tools could improve the quality of texture-modified foods for vulnerable Australians.
By helping manufacturers better understand and utilise industrial data, the research has the potential to strengthen Australia's manufacturing capability while improving productivity, resilience and innovation across the sector.
The initiative is also helping train the next generation of researchers and industry professionals who will support the future of Industry 4.0 and AI-enabled manufacturing in Australia.
