If we don’t control the AI industry, it could end up controlling us, warn two chilling new books

Associate Professor Michael Noetel warns that modern AI systems are “grown, not crafted,” meaning they consist of billions to trillions of parameters whose internal workings remain largely opaque.

He draws on two books - 'Empire of AI – Karen Hao (Allen Lane)'; and, 'If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: The Case Against Superintelligent AI – Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares (Bodley Head)' - highlighting a dangerous gap between the aims of AI companies and the real risk when control is lost.
